New North American Travel Documentation Requirements

If you plan to travel internationally and do not currently have a valid passport, please take a few minutes to review the updated travel regulations according to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

All Passengers - Air, Land or Sea travel:
Beginning June 1st, 2009, all passengers travelling between the United States, Canada, Bermuda and Mexico by air, land or by sea will be required to present a valid passport.

Note: In the travel industry, we suggest that you travel only with a valid passport, regardless of your destination, to help facilitate the customs process. Other documentation, including the new US Passport Card, may be acceptable, but only a legal, valid passport will ensure your entry into all foreign countries. Be sure to get up-to-date information on the acceptable secure travel documents for Canadian and American travelers prior to your trip.

Advantages of Travelling with a Passport

  • A passport is the only reliable and universally accepted identification document
  • Passports are required for entry into most foreign countries - please check the entry and exit requirements for each country you travel to prior to leaving.
  • Unlike a birth certificate or driver’s license, your passport can be replaced if lost, damaged, or inaccessible during the course of your trip
  • Passports also ensure full access to your funds while travelling, as they are often required for financial or legal transactions

Passport Tips

Verify that your passport is valid
  • It is recommended that your passport be valid at least 6 months after your return date, but check with your Country Travel Report (Canada or US) for your destination's requirements
Ensure accuracy within your passport
  • To avoid delays in processing, make sure your application is completed accurately.
  • Fill out, update and photocopy all necessary information
  • Updates refer to both written and photo identification
Passports are valuable documents
  • Keep your passport with you at all times in a money belt or store it safely in your hotel room safe.
  • Make 2 copies of the ID page in your passport. Give one copy to a friend or relative and keep the other in a safe place, separate from your actual passport.
